These girl torturers / murderers

Horrible, prolonged and deliberate offences by girls who were 13 and 14. They cannot be named, which is standard (but not always mandatory) with child criminals. It makes the naming of Jamie Bulger's killers (aged 10 and 11) look like vengeance rather than public interest.
Probably explained by Jamie being a child rather than a vulnerable adult, and the clamour in the press. I wish our judiciary could be conistent, but that is like hoping referees were consistent.

I think it is possible to both acknowledge the very obvious facts and still 'go medieval' because the facts won't make a blind bit of difference.
If your objection is more about people responding with 'hang em and flog em' type sentiments, there's not much to be done about that. You can only hold your nose and reassure yourself you are a more reasonable person. If that's what you think you are.
What I think is ridiculous is stating "We must try and understand why this happened" as though it is a moral imperative on us, and the exercise will actually achieve anything. Because, as I said, the Guardianista hand-wringing types would not countenance any practical measures being taken to try to reduce this sort of thing happening. Therefore it's a kind of dishonesty on their part. And yet they feel superior because they are reacting to the stories in a way they believe is intellectual rather than emotional, and sneering at the 'floggers'.
(For the record I seldom react emotionally to things that happen to strangers, simply because that is my personality, not because I have any hope or expectation that humans are redeemable)

That's not end of, in fact it's a completely circular argument, nurse was closer when she mentioned a combination of nurture and nature, but both those agents are arbitrary and out of our control.
Saying "people are scum because they are" is clearly a nonsense argument. As for asking "how will understanding the insight of a scum bag make things different?", a better question is what harm can it do and since when has ignorance been preferable to understanding?
